Why Your Mic Picks Up Background Noise (and the Fix Hierarchy)
Your microphone doesn't know what noise is — it converts all pressure waves into signal and lets software sort it out later. Three physical facts decide how much junk it captures: distance (sound intensity falls off steeply, so a mouth 3 cm away massively outguns a dishwasher 3 metres away), gain (a boosted input amplifies the room, not just you), and the room itself (hard surfaces keep every sound alive longer). 1. Understand what the mic actually hears
A few unglamorous physics points explain nearly every noisy-call complaint:
- Laptop mics are omnidirectional by design — they're built to hear a person anywhere in front of a screen, which means they also hear everything beside and behind it.
- Distance is exponential, not linear — halving the distance between mouth and mic gains you far more clarity than any settings change. This is why headset mics win: they sit centimetres from the source.
- Auto-gain chases quiet voices — when you sit far away and speak softly, the system amplifies everything to find you, floor noise included.

Before opening any settings panel:
- Get the mic close: any headset or earbuds with a mic beats a laptop array across the desk.
- Then reduce input gain until your voice sits at a healthy level — the background drops with it.
- Point noise away: face the mic away from the window, the corridor, the appliance.
- Soften the room where you can — a rug, curtains, a bookshelf behind you all shorten reflections.

Do directional microphones fix background noise?
They help — a cardioid mic rejects sound from behind — but placement still dominates. A directional mic across the desk hears more room than an omni mic on a headset boom two centimetres from your mouth.
Why does lowering my input volume reduce noise?
Gain amplifies the whole scene. When your voice is close and loud, you can afford a low gain that leaves distant noise below audibility. Lowering gain only works after you've moved the mic closer — done alone it just makes you quiet.
