How to Mute in Microsoft Teams Without Missing Your Cue
Toggle mute with Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+M (Mac). Better: stay muted and hold the Space bar to talk — Teams unmutes while it's held and re-mutes on release, so you never forget either state. Organisers can mute you but can never silently unmute you; you'll always be asked.
Menu paths checked against Microsoft's official Teams documentation (new Teams client, Windows & Mac) — July 2026.
1. Master the mute shortcut
One binding, no button-hunting:
- In any meeting, press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows) / Cmd+Shift+M (Mac) to toggle your mic.
- Watch the mic icon confirm the state — muted shows the strike-through.
- Mute the moment you stop speaking; it's the habit that makes every other fix on this site less necessary.
2. Use hold-Space-to-talk
Teams' push-to-talk: muted is the resting state, speech is deliberate:
- Join the meeting muted.
- When you want to speak, press and hold the Space bar — Teams temporarily unmutes and shows the live-mic state.
- Release Space and you're muted again, instantly.
For rooms the settings can't fix
Everything above tunes the filter you already have. When the noise itself is the problem — constant, loud, or unpredictable — Krisp works at the system level instead, cleaning your mic and your speakers across every app at once. There's a 7-day free trial without a card, so you can compare it against these settings in your own room.

Set your entrance to silent by default:
- On the pre-join screen, click the mic toggle off before selecting Join now.
- Teams remembers your last pre-join state for the next meeting — set it once, benefit daily.
- Entering an in-progress meeting with many participants? Teams often mutes you automatically — glance at the icon rather than assuming.
4. Manage mics as an organiser
Running the meeting gives you the room-scale controls:
- Open the People panel and click Mute all to silence the room at once.
- Hover an individual → Mute participant for targeted control.
- To keep attendees from unmuting — town halls, classrooms — use Disable mic for attendees in the meeting options, and lift it selectively when it's question time.
Still not fixed?
- Shortcut not working? Another app may own the combo globally; check your OS shortcut settings, or click the meeting window first for focus.
- Muted in Teams but colleagues still hear you? You're also joined by phone or a room device — mute every connection you hold.
- Headset mute light disagrees with Teams? Hardware mute and app mute stack independently; make both agree before speaking.
Frequently asked questions
Can the organiser unmute me without asking?
No. Organisers can mute anyone, but unmuting always requires your action — you'll see a request and remain muted until you accept. That's a deliberate privacy design, the same consent model Zoom uses.
Where do I set hold-to-unmute in Teams?
It works by default in meetings on the desktop client when you're muted and the meeting window has focus — press and hold Space to talk. If nothing happens, click the meeting window first, and confirm your client is up to date.
Will I be told when the organiser mutes me?
Yes — Teams shows a notification that you've been muted, and your mic icon switches to the muted state. Nothing you say afterwards reaches the meeting until you unmute yourself deliberately.
