How to Fix Echo and Robotic Audio in Webex

Two different diseases, one page. Echo is acoustics: someone's speakers are reaching a mic — headphones for that person ends it. Robotic, underwater audio is resources: a starved network or an overloaded CPU corrupting the stream — wire the connection, close the heavy apps. Diagnose by symptom first; the fixes don't overlap.

1. For echo: close the speaker-to-mic loop

Same physics as every meeting app:

  1. Identify the source — the participant whose mic indicator lights while others speak, and who typically can't hear the echo themselves.
  2. Get them onto headphones, or have them mute when not speaking.
  3. One room, multiple joined devices? Exactly one keeps audio; the rest join with mic muted and volume at zero.
Why this works: echo requires an open loop — playback loud enough to re-enter a microphone. Headphones or a single audio connection per room removes the loop physically, which beats asking software to un-mix it.

2. For echo on your side: align your devices

If others hear themselves when talking to you:

  1. In Settings → Audio, set the speaker and microphone to the same headset where possible.
  2. Lower speaker volume if you must use desk speakers, and increase mic-to-speaker distance.
  3. Confirm Noise removal is your Smart Audio mode — Music mode passes far more room sound through.
Why this works: Webex's echo canceller models the delay between its own output and your mic input; matched devices keep that delay predictable. Music mode deliberately relaxes processing, which includes some of that protection.

3. For robotic audio: feed the connection

Garbled, metallic, syllable-dropping audio is the network gasping:

  1. Prefer a wired connection, or move within clean line-of-sight of the router.
  2. Pause downloads, cloud syncs and streaming on your machine and network.
  3. Turn off your own video for a minute — if audio recovers, bandwidth is confirmed as the constraint.
  4. On a phone hotspot, expect artefacts — schedule critical calls on real broadband where possible.
Why this works: voice packets are time-critical; when they arrive late or not at all, the codec papers over the gaps and the result is the robot voice. More stable bandwidth means fewer gaps to conceal.

4. For robotic audio: unload the CPU

The same corruption appears when your machine can't process audio in real time:

  1. Close browser-tab graveyards, builds, and video exports during meetings.
  2. Check whether a fan-screaming process is pinned at 100% (Task Manager / Activity Monitor).
  3. If the machine is marginal, lower your video quality in Webex — video is the biggest local consumer.
Why this works: real-time audio needs its slice of CPU on schedule, every few milliseconds. An overloaded machine misses slices, and missed slices sound identical to network loss — which is why this cause hides so well.

Why does robotic audio come and go during the day?

Because its causes fluctuate: network congestion peaks (backups, streaming hours, office VPN load) and CPU spikes from other apps both corrupt audio intermittently. If it correlates with times of day, it's almost certainly network; if with what you're running, it's CPU.

Do I need to reinstall Webex to fix audio problems?

Rarely. Echo is acoustics and robotic audio is resources — neither is fixed by reinstalling. Reserve a reinstall for when audio settings won't persist or the device list stays wrong after restarts.
