Google Meet Microphone Not Working: The Complete Fix List
Meet runs in the browser, so there are two permission gates, and either one silences you: the browser's site permission (click the lock/tune icon in the address bar → allow Microphone for meet.google.com) and the OS-level permission for the browser itself (Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone; Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → your browser). Clear both, then pick the right mic under ⋮ → Settings → Audio — and make sure you're not just muted (Ctrl+D / ⌘+D toggles it).
Menu paths checked against Google's official Meet documentation — July 2026.
1. Allow the microphone in your browser
A single early "Block" click haunts Meet forever — the prompt never reappears on its own:
- On meet.google.com, click the lock / tune icon at the left of the address bar.
- Find Microphone and set it to Allow (or open Site settings and do it there).
- Reload the tab and rejoin the meeting.
2. Unblock the browser at OS level
The second gate — the operating system can deny your whole browser the mic:
Windows
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Ensure Microphone access is on, and your browser is allowed under app permissions.
Mac
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Enable the toggle next to your browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari…), then quit and reopen it.
3. Pick the correct microphone in Meet
Permission granted, still nothing? Meet may be listening to the wrong device:
- Click More options (⋮) → Settings → Audio (works on the join screen and in-meeting).
- Open the Microphone dropdown and select your actual device by name.
- Speak and watch for level indication; cycle to another entry if it stays dead.
The system-level option
In-app suppression is one layer. The other is a virtual-microphone tool such as Krisp, which sits between your mic and your meeting apps and removes noise in both directions before the call ever hears it. A 7-day free trial (no card needed) makes it easy to check whether it solves what the settings above couldn't.

It has to be said, because it's the number-one answer in the wild:
- Look at the mic icon in the meeting toolbar — red with a slash means muted.
- Press Ctrl+D (Windows) / ⌘+D (Mac) to toggle.
- Also check a hardware mute: headset buttons and inline cable switches mute upstream of everything.
5. Release the mic from other apps and restart the browser
Last layer — device contention:
- Close Zoom, Teams, OBS and any recorder that might hold the mic exclusively.
- Fully quit and reopen the browser (not just the tab) so devices re-enumerate.
- Bluetooth headset? Disconnect and reconnect it — the microphone profile occasionally fails to engage while audio still plays.
Still not fixed?
- Works everywhere except one meeting? The host may have muted all participants, or locked audio for attendees.
- Corporate laptop? Endpoint policies can block browser mic access wholesale — that's an IT conversation, not a settings hunt.
- Still dead after everything? Try another browser as a differential test: if Chrome fails and Edge works, reset Chrome's site permissions.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my mic work in Zoom but not Google Meet?
Zoom's desktop app and your browser hold separate OS permissions, and Meet additionally needs the site-level permission in the browser. Check the OS microphone privacy list for your browser, then meet.google.com's own site permission.
What's the fastest mute check in Meet?
Ctrl+D on Windows, ⌘+D on Mac — it toggles your mic from the keyboard. If the icon won't change, the host may have muted attendees, or one of the permission gates above is closed.
